Kendrick Lamar Talks About Ferguson Killing

Timelines Involved

Analysis

On a billboard interview, when asked about the police violence that happened to Michael Brown, Kendrick Lamar responded with,
"What happened to [Michael Brown] should’ve never happened. Never. But when we don’t have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us? It starts from within. Don’t start with just a rally, don’t start from looting — it starts from within.”
This ended up causing controversy about what he said, he ends up addressing the controversy in future interviews and his future song "Blacker The Berry" can be seen as him more thoroughly explaining his viewpoint.
In a Breakfast Club interview Kendrick explains that he still carries a lot of essence he did back from when he was in Compton so when he is talking about the community he is also talking to himself. The meaning behind what he was trying to say is respecting someone because he is a black man and not feeling hatred towards one another just because they are wearing a different color.
