This song was initially supposed to end up on Big Sean's album but didn't due to sample clearance issues. Despite Kendrick Lamar being a feature on the album he got most of the attention on the song.
Kendrick Lamar on the song "Control" announces that he will destroy the competition and he called out many famous rappers. The rappers named were "Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale, Pusha T, Meek Millz, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron', Tyler, Mac Miller". This warranted responses from many of the rappers some of which issuing their own diss track back. Drake responded with disapproval to this in interviews. Despite some response Kendrick Lamar himself never responded back to any.
In an interview with HOT 97, he says he didn't believe his verse on Control was that big of a deal when he wrote it but since their hasn't been much competition in hip hop for a while it sensationalized it a lot.
In an interview with the Breakfast Club in 2015, Kendrick explains that the aggression on this is due to west coast gangster rap influences so it's something that is just a part of him since he grew up there.
This song is often seen as the starting point of the rivalry between Kendrick and Drake and this is further demonstrated by the fact that after this song came out they were never on the same song together ever again, and seemingly traded many disses between each other from as early as 2014 with "The Language" by Drake.
